Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science. As Chair, I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to you through our website. Aerospace Engineering, a multidisciplinary field encompassing the entire lifecycle of aircraft and launch vehicles, is at the heart of our department’s mission. From design to construction, testing, manufacturing, and deployment, our focus areas include aerodynamics, lightweight structures, special materials, engines, motors, as well as stability, control, guidance, and navigation.

Established in 1942, our department remains committed to advancing technology for aerospace engineering missions in India. We strive not only to address practical challenges but also to delve into fundamental problems, contributing to the global aerospace engineering community and its foundational sciences. Our endeavors involve designing experimental apparatus, creating specialized measurement devices, and developing theoretical and computational methods and codes.

Our esteemed faculty members, joining us, commit to sustained efforts in exploring new directions. The goal is to become recognized experts in their fields within a decade. Students embarking on their journey with us can expect to engage at the forefront of engineering science, utilizing sophisticated tools and outstanding facilities.

Whether pursuing a Ph.D. or an MTech, our students acquire significant expertise in research methods and tools, contributing to the creation of new knowledge. Graduates from our MTech (research) program follow a similar path on a smaller scale, while those in the MTech (course-based) program are equipped to handle development problems confidently, drawing from their coursework and year-long projects.

Explore the webpages of our faculty for detailed insights into their current activities. We welcome various forms of engagement, including projects, consulting, and limited testing in our specialized facilities. Both the government and private sectors within India, as well as international institutions and agencies, are invited to collaborate. Our institute-wide offices are experienced in facilitating project execution, including managing intellectual property matters.

I look forward to potential collaborations and invite you to explore the field of aerospace engineering at the Indian Institute of Science.
